Introduction

(Thinking. Source: Facebook)

Hello fellow bloggers! I have never "blogged" before so this is definitely been interesting so far and I am excited about using it in the future for this class; it is nice seeing everyone else's blogs so easily to see what their thoughts are. To get started my full name is Alexander Ahmad Okhovat. I am half Persian (fathers side) and currently am a senior studying Chemistry here at OU. My undergraduate studies have been a long fun ride but the end is near for me and I can see the light at the end of the tunnel. My future plans are to further my Chemistry knowledge as much as possible and go on to graduate school. I would love to study elsewhere like somewhere in Colorado (my favorite place), California, Washington, Oregon, or any states in the western part of the country honestly. At this time in my life, I would absolutely love ending up in the pharmaceutical field working for a major company like Bayer as a senior research doctor. I have lived here in Norman my entire life; going to Community Christian School as a child, eventually transferring to Norman North High School, and finally ending up here at OU. My Dad, Uncle, and Aunt are all alumni here at OU so I am honored to follow in their footsteps studying what I am passionate about, science! One of my main accomplishments during my undergrad would be working with Dr. Nicholas; a research professor I have been interning with throughout most of my undergrad years. I have gained so much experience in the lab for the future chemistry career and I believe that was a major step on the right path to succeed on my journey. Over the break, I visited family in Texas mostly and spent the New Years on the beach of Galveston with my girlfriend, Lauren in a nice resort. Not only am I a scientist, but also an artist! In my free time when I am not in the lab, I am painting, stenciling, sketching, and I also electroform (process of metal plating) minerals with copper (check out my work in the student art gallery everyone!), and attend as much live music as possible. Hands down, Pretty Lights would be my favorite artist if I had to choose; I love the style of music he produces and artists that are similar.

On any and every vacation I get, I try my hardest to travel and explore more areas of this beautiful world I have yet to experience. The more I have traveled, the more I began realize how truly beautiful life and nature truly are. Science and art are in perfect sync with nature when I am inspired in my travels. Oh, and I also have the coolest cat on this planet (trust me) whose name is Phylix.

  1. Hey Alex!
I too am a senior and I am ready to get to the end of the undergraduate tunnel. I think it is awesome you have such a passion for chemistry and art. I am hoping to work as a physical therapist someday and I have really enjoyed study different areas of science. I have never heard of electroform but that sends really interesting and unique. The past couple summers I have been able to visit oregano and some other areas in the pacific northwest and so I think you should definitely try to go out there if you get the opportunity. If you ever get a chance to visit British Columbia I would take it, it is such a beauty area of North America.

  2. Yo, Alex!

Saw your intro while scrolling through, looks like we are (indirectly) in the same class this semester. Nice!

Unfortunately, I have yet to see Pretty Lights live. I'm looking to remedy this, and soon! If you hear about anything, be sure to let me know. I missed you and Lauren at Decadence man. Big G and Odesza freaking killed it. Especially Odesza.

Anyway, hope to see you around campus this semester bro. We should chill sometime so I can meet Phylix. I'm allergic but I have a cat (Moose) at my place, so it's all good.

    1. YO YO! How cool, you are taking the Indian Epics while I am taking the Mythology and Folklore course. If I could not get into this course, I would have been in Indian Epics with you. Pretty Lights is a must see...I really hope he gets announced at the Electric Forest this year; that would just be icing on the cake! Come over and hang out anytime you have my number! Phylix always enjoys new company. Lauren is slightly allergic too but she's worth it..haha Take it easyy, mayne!

  3. Hi Alex!
It’s nice to meet you! I, as well, have never blogged before, so this is all new to me too! I do kinda like it though because it is something different than the usual D2L discussion board. I commend you for your major! I took Chemistry 1 and 2 last year, and I didn't like it at all, so that’s great that someone does! I bet working for a big pharmaceutical company would be pretty cool, especially if you were the one who was able to help create a “new” medicine. Also, it sounds like you had a pretty fun break! I love to travel too, it just take so much time (and money) that is hard to come by in college. Lastly, cute cat! I tend to like dogs more, but cats aren't too bad I guess. Hope you have a great semester and good luck with graduation!

  4. It is so great to have someone with Persian heritage in this class, Alex! The whole Persian storytelling traditions is one of my favorites; I studied Farsi in school for a few years so that I could read a little bit on my own, although that is many years ago. Such a beautiful language! Do you speak Farsi??? And wow, that is so cool about your art work: do you have a picture of something in the Student Art Gallery that I can share in the announcements? That would be so cool!

Meanwhile, your Phylix is surely destined to be famous in the cat meme world if you make some Phylix memes. That picture is ADORABLE. What a great expression!

You saw the Persian tales unit that is coming up, and there are some other fantastic resources online for the Persian storytelling tradition, so if you have any interest in doing a project like that for class, I will be very glad to help you in searching out online resources! That Persian unit in the UnTextbook is one of my personal favorites! :-)

  5. Nice to meet you Alex. Another chemistry major, woo-hoo! I have never blogged before as well, but I am enjoying this class just like you. So you are half-Persian, that is really interesting. I would like to know more about Persian culture. You went to Community Christian school? I went to memorial high school in Edmond, but My brother goes to christian community school so there is a connection.

  6. I've never heard of Pretty Lights before, but I'll check them out, since the picture of the concert looks really cool. It's also cool that your dad is Persian (if I read and understood that correctly). Also, that cat is adorable. I've never wanted a pet so much before, it might be because I'm a senior and an "adult" now. Cute cat!

  7. Haha, that’s one cool cat. I’m impressed with your interest in art. I like art but I’m not an artist by any means. I can’t draw to save my life so I’m impressed by your skills. You should paint a picture for one of your storybooks. It would be cool to see some of your work and you could tie it in together.

  8. Hi, it was very interesting to here that you went to Norman North and are from Norman. I went to Norman High School, and I have been living in Norman since 2005. Pretty lights reminds me of the Trans-Siberian Orchestra. Have you ever been on one of their shows? They do a whole light show with ever one of their performances.

  9. I've never blogged before this class either, but I'm liking it a lot so far, and I hope you are as well! Phylix is so cute!! I have a cat at home named Yellow, but Phylix looks like he could be a close second in the best cat ever awards! I also love traveling, and I feel like I never get to see or do enough when I'm visiting a new place!

  10. Alex, it was so fun reading your introduction! That is so cool that you are studying chemistry (I am horrible at science so I am always impressed by people who are talented in that field!) I think its really cool how you love to create art as a hobby. You sound like a very well rounded person with lots of interests! Good luck with school!

  11. Phylix looks like he is such a fun cat, I love when they almost act like people. My grandmothers cat sits in her bed like Phylix does and it is just so cute! How cool that your an artist. I would love to go see your electroform pieces, it sounds really cool! I agree with what Laura said, doing a Persian focus this semester would be really interesting to read!

  12. Hi Alex! Phylix does look like the cutest cat ever! I bet he's a sweetheart and is fun to play with. I think that it is awesome that you have 2 very different diverse passions, art and science! It opens up so many doors in life and so many different opportunities! Best of luck to the rest of your senior year!

  13. Hey Alex! Thats awesome you're into science and art! The type of art you do sounds so interesting! I have a photography minor so I am in the art building here at OU all the time and its so interesting seeing different types of work. I wish I went to go see live music more! Its always so much fun but I never get the chance to! Your kitty is really cute! The cats that get a little fluffier like that are so awesome to snuggle with! I have a cat Thabo that is different colors, he is black and white, but I love his fur! Good luck with the rest of your senior year!

  14. Hey Alex,
I am a senior too, I think we are probably both ready to be done! I really do think it is awesome you're into art! I believe art is such a powerful thing we get to have that goes underused most of the time. I can not believe you major in Chemistry. I can not stand Chemistry after taking Chem I last semester, it was a complete nightmare, but kudos to you haha. Also, I really enjoy live, it is always a relaxing/fun time to kick back and enjoy music. Good luck with the rest of your senior year!

  15. Hey Alex! Wow, where to begin! First, I think it is crazy cool that you do electroform (which I did have to google)! There are some crazy things you can do with that. Also Pretty Lights is a great musician that my roommate introduced me to last year! My boyfriend is a Chemical Engineer, and is about all the Chemistry I can take in my life so kudos to you for majoring in it! Good luck with your last semester at OU!

  16. Hi Alex! I think it's really cool that you are so passionate about chemistry! I know I personally suck at it, so it's nice to know there are people who actually understand it! It's pretty awesome that you get to do lab research. I'm just imaging you mixing some really cool concoctions or something! Your art all sounds amazing, and I'm definitely going to have to go check it out sometime! I hope the rest of your last semester goes well!

  17. Hey, nice to meet you!!! I took chemistry freshman year for a prerequisite and did well, but knew that's all I wanted to do. I applaud you for loving it! It's fun to hear that you went to Galveston because I am from Houston! I hope you went to La King's Confectionary, which is the ice cream parlor that has a taffy machine! I have so many great memories in Galveston, even though the water is pretty gross. Hope you had fun and good luck on your future!!!

  18. Your cat Phylix is so cute! I want a cat really bad and can’t wait to get one when I get an apartment of my own. Both of my parents graduated from OU as well so it’s really fun when they come and visit because they get to catch up with their old friends too! I took Chem 2 last semester and thought it was really difficult so I have a ton of respect for you having Chemistry as your major! I wish you luck in graduate school!

  20. Hi, Alex! It is nice to meet you. Congratulations on almost graduating! That is so exciting! I would also love to live in Colorado some day...it is also one of my favorite places in the world, it is just beautiful there! Your cat Phylix is adorable...that picture of him made me laugh! I also love cats myself---I have three cats back home in Texas. I look forward to reading some of your work for this class!

  21. Hey Alex! I haven’t ever blogged before either so this has definitely been an interesting semester so far! It sounds like you have your career pretty much figured out, I am jealous of that. I am still trying to figure out what I want to do with my life. I too love to travel though and would say that Colorado is one of my favorite states.

  22. Hi Alex! Nice to meet you. This is my first time blogging as well. That's great that you are majoring in chemistry. I took Chem 1 and I found it to be interesting, but very difficult. Going into the pharmaceutical field sounds like a great was to go. I hope you get the opportunity to study on the west coast or Colorado. I visited Colorado as a kid and loved it. It's so beautiful there. Hope you are having a great semester.

  23. Hey Alex, nice to meet you! I also have never had a blog before so this has definitely been an interesting class! I really love music as well and attend as many concerts as I can afford! I've currently got nine concerts planned for this year. I also want to travel the world! There are so many beautiful places in the world and so little time to visit them all! Good luck on the rest of your semester!

  24. Hi Alex!
First of all, I love that you are so interested in Chemistry! Before I decided on broadcast journalism, I thought I would be a pharmacist, but then I realized I was terrible in chemistry! So basically, I'm thankful for people like you! It looks like you have found you niche. I'm excited for you and your future endeavors. I also think it would be neat to move to Colorado. I have family that lives there and I love going up there to visit them because it's such a beautiful state. Good luck in the rest of your semester!

I had never blogged before this class either! I’m glad to have gotten the experience from this online class. That is so fun to have so many family members as alums from OU! That is exciting to be a graduating senior. Also, I love your cat’s name! Good luck with the rest of your semester and with graduate school!

  26. Hey Alex!
So I have already commented on your blog before and I just really enjoy reading your stories. I hope you have enjoyed this class as much as I have. I had also forgotten about your interest in chemistry! I can't wait to see what your new adventure will bring and how exciting it will be. Good luck in your future endeavors!

  27. Hey Alex,

I haven't blogged before this semester either, but it seemed to be a fun concept that I might carry on with. It is weird that I haven't made it to your blog yet and now it is Week 15. Anyways, it was great to get to read your Introduction and get to know you through reading it! I just have to say... More respect you for taking on Chemistry, that class about ended me. Good luck on your Final!

  28. Hi Alex,

I can't imagine studying chemistry in college! The last time I took chemistry was seriously my sophomore year of high school. So, as you can imagine, that was very elementary level chemistry. Thats awesome, though, that you know what you want to do with it! I'm an advertising major and I am still trying to figure out what to do after graduation. Luckily, I am only a junior so I have one more year to figure it out!

Good luck with grad school and everything that entails! I wish you the best!
